![]() There is no dock on the east side of Shackleford Island. Although I did not visit the beaches at Shackleford, the ferry captain said that the beaches at Cape Lookout (South Core Banks) are better, plus there is the Cape Lookout Lighthouse and the Cape Lookout Village Historic District, which is now a ghost town, so there are more things to do. The east end has more vegetation-even a maritime forest-so this is where the horses tend to be. The Harkers Island ferry goes to the east side, and this is the one to take if you want to see the wild horses. The ferry from Beaufort goes to the west end of the island, and this is the one to take if you want to go to the beach. The ferries serve two distinct purposes, so be sure you make reservations for the correct one. The current park concessionaire, Island Express Ferry Service, runs two ferries to Shackleford Banks, one from the Harkers Island Visitor Center and another from the town of Beaufort, North Carolina. ![]() No vehicles are allowed on Shackleford Banks, so ferries to the island carry passengers only. Concessionaires can change with every contract renewal, so be sure to check the official Cape Lookout National Seashore’s List of Authorized Ferry Services web page for the current ferry operators. Approved park concessionaires run ferries to all three islands. No bridges lead to any of the three barrier islands that make up Cape Lookout National Seashore, so you will have to take either a private boat or a public ferry. Note: If your party has multiple reservations for the same cabin under different names, please inform park rangers at the cabin office when checking in.Passenger ferry to Shackleford Banks and Cape Lookout Lighthouse If you do not check out our staff will remove your belongings to prepare cabin for the next party. You must check out of their cabins at 10:00 AM. If arriving after 3:00 PM, call the Cabin Office ahead of time to arrange for your keys and access to your cabin after the office closes. Prior to check in, you are not allowed to place personal items on the porches while you wait. To check in, you must go to the cabin offices to retrieve your key codes. Visitors are only able to check into their cabins at 2:00 PM EST. Refunds resulting from storm closures will be handled on a case by case basis. CancelationsĬustomers who cancel a cabin reservation less than 14 days before the arrival date will pay a $10.00 service fee and forfeit the first night's use fee. In person reservations can only be made with a credit card. Note : Cabins can be reserved on an availability basis the day of arrival at the Cabin Office during business hours (8 am - 3 pm). Both barrier islands, North Core Banks and South Core Banks, are open for vehicle/tent camping as well as surf fishing, shelling, etc. Updates on Great Island cabins and the availability of other amenities (gas and ice sales, bath house, etc) can be found on the Park Conditions page. Great Island Cabins will be open from MaNovember 26, 2023. The park's sandy beaches are prime locations for fishing, shelling, swimming, birding, and simply relaxing. The cabin camps can only be reached by boat, adding an element of both privacy and adventure. The rustic, wooden cabins at Long Point and Great Island offer beachfront views of the pristine, undeveloped barrier islands of Cape Lookout National Seashore.
